Second attempt

Adding foil to the back would double the mass and lower the impedance, which would move the resonance frequency back down and increase the "Q." But I think that would undo some of the gains Wendell is after. Also, how would you get to that side of the Mylar? Plus as you say you'd stiffen the diaphragm, so you'd be reducing its compliance, which would tend to push the resonant frequency up again. You could also potentially double up the foil on one side, as long as you were trying to lower rather than raise impedance. I think that would also tend to reduce compliance, but less, since you'd have a layer of adhesive between the foil traces rather than the Mylar.

There was a discussion of the U-turn issue at some point, and the conclusion was that they do the u-turns by folding the foil twice.
