RE: here is a Wendell Diller follow-up on hot-rodding Ferdinand Posche's "VW", REALLY

I don't recall having heard any metalized polyester sound on these Monsoons, either. The usual frequency-dependent ribbonish distortion, sure, but not much of the snare drum effect.

I suspect the Maggie woofers are substantially different than the mids in this respect since they're intentionally underdamped. But that would be less true if the mass were decreased, since they'll store less energy and Q will go down. So less ringing/time smear. But particularly with the MMG's, where the resonance is up in the midbass (I recall reading somewhere that the woofer resonance of the IVA's is down around 35 Hz), pushing the peak up could change the character of the sound. It isn't just a matter of the resonance being higher, you're going to lose some low frequency extension and dipole cancellation compensation. Also, I assume that some of the peak is restoring bass balance owing to the low frequency response limit of the MMG. Nothing that I'd expect to be a show stopper. Doubly so with the Tympanis, since I plan to use digital EQ on the bass. And the ear is a less sensitive to resonances at low frequencies than it is higher up, in fact a few dB of midbass elevation can be pleasing -- a fortunate thing since in head fringing days, just about every recording had it.
