Dipole speaker placement

Mr P, you may be aware of this, but in case you've not seen it.

Years ago studies by Bell Labs determined that for optimum clarity and definition at least a 10 millisecond delay was needed between direct sound and reflected sounds. Fortunately sound travels at very close to 1'/ms, so calculations are easy.

From that a dipole speaker should be placed at least 5' out from the front wall. That provides the 10 ms delay for sound from the back of the panel to reflect forward to the panel and on to the listener.

I believe this became better known in calculating and treating side wall reflections from box speakers. For either type of speaker and consideration, when something equal to or greater than 10' is not possible then diffraction panels are recommended at the reflection points.

BTW, I has the original ML CLS speakers soon after they were introduced. From maybe 60 Hz or so on up they were wonderful speakers. But I couldn't accommodate subs and missed solid bass below that. Then after a few months problems developed and eventually the dealer took them back. Later I learned the mylar could stretch which created the sonic problems, but that could be repaired with heat from a hair dryer or heat gun. Too late, they were gone by then.
