RE: Large Format Panel Type Speakers and Image Size

The 3 way ribbon Maggies do a better job of producing full sized images without exaggerating images of close miked voices or instruments. It is the narrow midrange and ribbon tweeter. The crossover on the large panel also has an effect on this imaging problem. Steeper low pass slopes clean up the images. The greyness is largely an amp compatibility issue as both the amp and the speakers tend to compress at transient peaks. Class D amps seem to compress less than other designs. Bracing the speakers with Mye stands PG rebuilds, etc. helps with that and produces better perceived dynamics.

The Tympani and 30 models allow you to focus the driver time alignment to produce precise imaging and narrow sweet spots or more diffuse images and large sweet spots, the way Wayne likes to demonstrate them.

In my modified Tympani, lowering the midrange crossover to a combined acoustic and electric 3rd order and 3rd order low pass on the woofer panels combined with time alignment cleaned up imaging to lifesize but precise. No diffuse ghosts. The Neo8 I used for the midrange arrays provided a large improvement in dynamics and an easier load for the amp. Tone is vivid and big rather than grey. Particularly noticeable on transients.

If the big mouth image problem bothers you then consider the 3.7i and bigger, along with excessively rated amplifiers, and stands. Otherwise you will not minimize these issues. Consider GR research line array speakers as a possible substitute that does not have these issues. Note that the Maggie ribbon is hard to beat and GR's Neo3 tweeters are not quite there.

If you are good with Vandersteens then they can be time aligned (stands and placement) to produce terrific imaging on a holographic soundstage. The big Maggie or stat imaging is still closer to full size than what a Vandersteen does, but it is my second choice within a reasonable budget. The panels can also pick up substantially more detail than most box speakers.
