Large Format Panel Type Speakers and Image Size

When I was first introudced to high end audio the local shop was a dealer for Martin Logan and Apogee. There was a shop in Seattle that had Magnepan, and another had Acoustat. I always dreamed about owning panels, but as a poor college student that was not going to happen.

A number of years ago I had an interim system consisting of Acoustat 1+1, the TBT200 amplifier, and TNP pre-amp. At that time I was deep into SET amps, but I had to sell a system and this was an opportunity that presented itself as a friend of mine had picked these pieces up.

What I found is that the speakers created a huge image, larger than life really and I found it quite disconcerting. I also found the presentation to be tonally grey, where everything sounded like it was mixed the same. I moved on from these pieces.

But I have not given up on the dream. I wonder if this image size is related to panel size? I have heard similar effects on some of the larger magnepans, and I wonder if its because the panel portion is run full range and its a factor of size. Of course the drawback is that you need square inches of panel to gain efficiency and realistic dynamic output.

Any observations?
