Well I haven't owned a japanese receiver or budget priced SS amp in a long time so maybe that's why I never had any problems.
As to planars and SETs, Well I am getting some very sweet sound right now from my DIY planar hybrids with two SET amps (from KR Audio) in a fully active biamped setup. The "ribbon" is a Bohlender Graebener RD 28.1 and if you have never heard a push pull planar driver run by SET then you haven't heard just how good it can sound. With 89db/watt and a flat 4 ohm load, it is very easy to drive and has good dynamic headroom. The woofer is a nice easy load as its in a sealed box and nominal 8 ohms as well as being about 89db/watt. Each amp puts out an honest 25 watts (as checked on a power meter at a friend's place) so it is plenty dynamic.
It also drives my 84db/watt electrostats no problem even though they go from 2 ohms in the bass and 2 ohms in the highs. No worries, sounds great and has plenty of punch; however, my room is not really big I must admit. In much bigger room I would need more power for the estats.
