Hey cityjim,I think you are right on the money about Stereophile. The more the equipment costs the more expensive the ads and the better it must sound ...
The same applies for the German "stereoplay". It used to be a real good hifi-magazine with hot DIY receipts. But they found that they shot themselves in their foot when they recommended cheap laquered copper wire (used for high-quality-inductors) twisted with a power drill as speaker cable. Readers that had just spent a thousand bucks for some "hi-end" cable looked real stupid and they probably lost the ads of the makers of those "great" expensive speaker cables.
It makes sense, when I look at the output transformers of my EARs. All the music first goes through many feet of just that same laquered copper wire. Makes no sense to me to add some feet of arm-thick "hi-end" cables between those transformers and my Maggies.
And those EARs really sound fantastic. Then I might be totally wrong ...
A note on Musical Fidelity though: I still have a pair of old/obsolete 50 W class A monos of that brand for the worst-case scenario (burning up my beloved EARs) and must say that even though they have a very modest output they sound beautiful being "sand", accidentally they are also designed by Tim de Paravicini.
A very good friend of mine with "golden ears" still keeps his MF A1 and hasn't found a better amp yet. So you must be talking about the more recent Musical Fidelity gear which I don't endorse either. Those were the days ...
By the way I heard that the recent "Mark Levinson"-gear isn't designed by Mr. Levinson but by some independent developer. The most recent and best sounding amps by Mr. Levinson appear to be the famous "Cello" amps. They appear to be very difficult to find on the 2nd-hand market as their owners like to keep them.
Cheers, Jörg.
