There was a recent post from Morricab, about a 1.6 owner preferring to use an 18 watt SET amp. I don’t have much experience, but did try a couple of tube amps on my 3.6's. The smallest were in the ~100 wpc range, limited to small scale, background music at low volumes, but uninspiring like elevator music. Things got out of control with complex music and/ or pushed.OTOH, the100 wpc ARC drove the 1.6’s easily and leads me to believe the smaller maggies may not be as power hungry. I can see someone using an even lower powered amp, in a small room with a strong bias towards intimate music. In terms of amplifier choices, the smaller maggies have a greater advantage. There’s so much more options available and find the smaller amps sound sweeter / purer than the larger models – even within the same brand.
I think as you climb up in horsepower, tubes become less economical, but finding a “can they MAKE these any heavier†solid-state amp that’s refined enough w/o spending an arm and leg is the challenge. The ribbon tweeters are very articulate and did a great job showing how difficult it is for a solid-state amp to do a clean, airy, articulate treble.
Hmmm…if we could get the maggie efficiency up.
