I have a couple of Eico small-tube (EL84) amps, and neither is very impressive with the Maggies. I suppose it's possible that the Scott is stronger than the Eico's, but I've always considered it pretty similar in output. That said, my little Eico HF-81 with a whopping 14 watts per channel, sounds much nicer than you'd think via Maggie, on small scale chamber music and female vocalists. Bad things happen, though, when the music gets either loud or complex (or both).Come to think of it, a lot of the Mapleshade recordings tend to be small-scale stuff that works well. I've found them nicely recorded, but none of the 12 or 15 that I've bought have made it to my "favorites" list.
Actually, given the Magneplanar 1.6's fearsome reputation, it's pretty remarkable how well so many amps do with the Maggies. For instance, another small-tube amp, the Manley Stingray, is also reputed to sound heavenly with the Maggies. I'm hoping to hear that one day.
YMMV
