mrh,Finally, I've be waiting for new subjects like you to be ushered into the domain of the ESL 57....I've seen your posts from time to time in vintage...congratulations.
One of the finest amps that I have heard with the 57's(& I've tried alot) is the McIntosh MC225(7591)..now I have a Sherwood 5000II with 7698's (7591's compactron cousin) and it is a teriffic amp even in stock form. Go for the Sherwood!...I never understood the attraction of the Fishers..they are terribly unresolving ( I have several in updated form)..The Eico might be fun as the el84 will give you nice tone but not much slam.I've never heard the Sansui...but you always hear great things about their transformers.
Now don't let anybody tell you that the 57's shouldn't be used with more than 15wpc. The more power the more control the amp has over those flapping bass panels and push-pull power is ideal for the quads.
Use your volume controls carefully or install clamp boards and you're all set. Make sure your panels are in good shape..Dr. Quad's site and Gary Jacobosen's site are great resources. If you can get away with loud being at 90-98db sound pressure levels and little bit smaller window on the performance then you will not find a better speaker at any price. If you're used to the boom and sizzle then you'll probably be looking elsewhere.
Good Luck and have fun!
AJ
