Well, if you ask PG, he'll tell you they are supposed to absorb vibration :^)

At one time I entertained using stainless steel pipe, but then figured it would have to be filled with sand and sealed. Too much of a hassle.

The wood is "already" filled. And they are strong too; I have all three mounting points on each end of the wood/clevis brackets bolted with allen socket bolts and t-nuts or lock nuts, no fasteners screwed into wood. I can literally pick the speaker up, using just the struts. Standard 1-1/4" diameter oak dowel from my local Lowes.

The brackets come from an aircraft supplier.
