All ribbons are 'planar' ribbons. The main diff. in the B-G planar is that it's attached on all sides. The Newform being a 'ribbon' is attached only at the ends and bows out to make the sound and is strongest in the center of the ribbon sections.
B-G's Neo 3's and Neo 8's are great IMO and easy to run a line of whatever length you'd like.
My GR Alphas use 8 Neo 8's per speaker and it's outstanding IMO.
I also own the Newform 645's wich uses their 45" ribbon.I think the Neo 8's are better in prettty much every way. Maybe a little less airy but everything is so clearly cleaner and better controlled that it's no contest.
The B-G Neos are also nearly weightless while the older B-G planars and Newform ribbon are a LOT heavier.
The Newform ribbon is really not designed to fit into a cabinet either so you might have a tough time working with it.
The diff. between true ribbon and quasi-ribbon (which the Newform is) is that a true ribbon is pure aluminum which is as pure as you can pass a signal though, but then that's like a short circuit so it has to have a transformer on it to raise the imp.
A quasi-ribbon is a sheet of plastic (Mylar, Kapton, Kaladex) with a super thin ammount of alum etched onto the surface. This raises the imp. without adding anything to the signal path plus the plastic will never stretch out where-as a true ribbon can.
I call the older B-G's long ribbon and the new small Neo's 'planars'. I don't use the word ribbon at all since they're clammped on all sides.
There's not 'offical' dictionary def. though I guess. These B-G designs are also plastic etched with alum.
'Vibrating circuit boards' is the insulting way to describe them. heheTheir magnets are on the front and back though. Ribbons have their magnets on the side and can also twist when pushed. Just less control.
There are trade off to all the designs.
