In summer, we have an average bill of $25 that go up to around $100 until we hit November through March that go from $150 to now, $350.
I just reprogrammed the thermostat. It was set at 4:30AM to 10AM and then 4PM to 10PM. Now, it's 6:30AM to 9AM and 7:30PM to 9PM. And I set the temperature down, so we'll be doing the 'Jimmy Carter' sweater look.
My office has a mini-split and we hang there in the early evening, so we don't need to heat the whole house. Like yours, our main house is old, going on 86. It's about 2,300 sq ft and has had a major remodel, adding a large family room and kitchen nook. The old part of the house doesn't have any insulation except for the lath and plaster, so it tends to be a bit drafty. Adding insulation in the ceiling of the basement would probably help.
The windows have been replaced to dual pane except for the living room with big picture windows and a couple of old louvered windows. We're considering replacing those.
