While it's an acre lot, much of it is hard-scarped with the rest having ground cover, paths and succulents and hedges. We had only two small grass areas between a brick walk from the back porch when we bought the place. Our first upgrade was to cover it with brick for a large patio.
Here's a shot with the brick work done. We also took down iron fence and gates since we didn't have the need to corral little ones from getting out and into the pool. Then, the porch was extended and we added the planter. The trellis is the greatest because the sun bakes the area in the afternoon. We covered it with 2x3s on edge for 50% coverage at high noon. Now, it's nice a cool.
