Good point....

I format the USB drives with NTFS on the QNAP box. It's got four 3.2 USB ports, so I plug them in directly. If I want to read them on the PC, no problem. If I access the NAS via SMB, then I can read the attached USB drives on the NAS from my PC.

I just plugged in one of the USB backups to a Mac Mini and it works fine. As I recall, that's not a surprise for reading, but Apple may not let you write to the drives. Catch-22.

BTW: I just use rsync for backups. It's quick.
