Yeah, I grew up and still live in N. San Diego county which as you know has always had a large 'Mexican' population which is a misnomer because most of them were indigenous people that had been here forever unless they came from Spain. Back when I was a kid, we rarely heard Spanish and I don't believe that many 'Mexicans' even spoke Spanish unless they did so at home and were more recent immigrants.
Of course it's changed a lot with a lot more recent immigrants. On the upside, we've got a lot more and better taquerias and Mexican markets where we can get good carne asada. I remember going to a Mexican restaraunt in New Jersey years ago and I didn't recognize as Mexican food that I was used to having here.
And then, there's Tex/Mex.....is that Mexican food?
