What has happened with Alabama, Georgia, Ohio St, Clemson and others is that the top of the heap get all the best players. 'Bama has 3rd and 4th string players that would be 1st stringers on most other teams. Since the top tier take all the top recruits, the others in the conference don't have the depth to compete down the road toward the end of the season.

A few key injuries can upset the entire team's chances. Not so for 'Bama, they've got a half dozen players to plug into any position because their depth is far deeper.

Of course, the transfer portal is changing the dynamic. Lincoln Riley nearly pulled off a magical season using the portal. It was an amazing turnaround, but SC still doesn't have the depth and it showed on defense and a couple of key O line players.
