One of my sons went the community college route and at least about 5 years ago, it was only about $250/semester. But you do need books and they can be expensive for certain books. Most aren't too much and can be rented from Amazon and other places.
California State Universities are about $3,500/semester for 9 units and above. For the University of California schools, the cost is more. UCLA was about $18K per year whereas USC or Stanford would cost you $65K or more for one year's tuition. Granted, room and board can be expensive. When my other son was at UCLA, rents were easily $1,000 a month for a shared bedroom in an apartment. We covered that cost and he had a scholarship for tuition and took out a loan to cover his food costs. My other son commuted, so it can be done.
BTW: Both sons took on about $10K in loans. The first has already paid his off and the other one just graduated last spring and will need to start paying. So if one get his loans forgiven, should the other one gets his payments back for the loan he paid off?
