It's impossible to elect a Dem to a state wide office in Texas.
I'm not a Beto fan, and I'd hoped for a candidate with less baggage, if not actual qualifications, but the candidate doesn't actually matter here. Every major metro area in the state overwhelmingly voted for Beto, with the exception being Fort Worth; and there, Beto lost by 20k votes on over 500k cast. It's the polar opposite situation in Illinois where Cook and DuPage counties determine the direction of the state. In Texas, rural counties, not cities, determine the direction of things.
It's a situation I just don't see changing in any foreseeable future no matter the candidate, and especially when you also consider effects of gerrymandering. I cannot condemn one side for doing what's within the rules, but it absolutely has an effect. For example, my congressional district, before the last redistricting, voted Biden by five points - after the redistricting Trump would've won by twelve. IMO, partisan control of how voting districts are determined should be illegal. Surely in the land of everyone is created equal we can find a less biased way.
Anyway ...-
