Before we radically modified the space a couple of years ago, I initially took Victor's approach with dual subs - they were hidden behind the chairs.
After the remodel, the speakers were placed on the opposite side because there was now an island where they and a wall were once placed.
One objective was to minimize the amount of visible gear and wiring with the new space. One sub is now in the left front corner while the other is at the rear diagonal. Difficult to see, but just under the Maggie surround under the igloo.
We also moved the outer wall another five feet which enabled us to put a closet to the right where the power amp and Oppo player live. That hides behind the hinged triple pic to the far right. All wiring went through a chase in the wall or under the floor.
