You're lucky that the other guy had high coverage....

A low cost liability coverage in CA only covers $15,000 for bodily injury and $30,000 per accident.

My daughter had an accident where a low cost policy driver rear ended an SUV and pushed it into her little Ranger pickup, destroying the bed. The policy only covered $10,000 per accident, so she and the other motorist only got $5,000 each which was far less than the damage. Of course, the low cost driver had no assets so suing would have been a waste of time.

In fact, I checked our policy and it covers $300,000/$500,000 for medical which still wouldn't cover Dave's full bill.

OTOH, the insurance companies generally have deals that take off 30-50% of the bill by contract with the hospitals and even more if they go to negotiations. These bills are insane. A single Tylenol tablet may be billed at $25.
