We also have an inkjet all in one and only use it for scanner and a copy once in a while. The old HP Laserjet 4000 is still chugging away with over 230K pages printed.
We had a color laser printer and as you found, the color for photos weren't great, but it was nice for color text for flyers or whatnot. The cost of the toner caused us to stick with the old B&W Laserjet. We get about 10,000 pages on a cartridge for the 4000.
