The Moon and Mars... not so much.I am a child of the "IGY" and was a huge fan of space travel & exploration (as was most of my generation). From a 2022 perspective, I don't see much practical advantage to manned space travel, though.
In terms of space age technology advancements -- well, I guess we got Tang.
Full disclosure: our daughter's father in law is (was, I guess, technically) an astronaut, having flown as a mission specialist on a space shuttle mission in the 1990s. Don't get me wrong, I think this is really cool ... but I think those days are (long) past.
The Artemis project, technologically, seems like a huge step backwards. NASA, like (e.g.) Boeing, seems very much stuck in their past.
THAT said, I don't expect the billionaire tech bros' efforts to pan out, either. They're too glib to succeed without killing people needlessly, I suspect .I think that unmanned exploration of space still has legs (so to speak), however. Every person who doesn't go to space is 50 (or 60, or 70 kg) of other stuff that can go, the way I look at it. (And, yeah, I know my opinions ain't gonna set policy!)
Sorry to go all grumpy old man on the topic, but I think the space age as this Artemis project celebrates it ended ca. 1972 (or certainly by the time Challenger exploded).
all the best,
mrh
