Mrs. H (and I) are thinking Northern Goshawk

Although can't be sure about the size.
Color and pattern can be quite variable on any hawks -- and young ("juvenal") can be extra-confounding. :)

Mrs. H suggests looking at the photo of the juvenal in the photo next to the "habitat" heading at the link below.

Here's a not-great photo of a juvenal goshawk sitting on one of our birdfeeders here in NH.

We had a large amount of wooded conservation land behind our property when we lived in MA, and had a breeding pair (or more) in the woods for many years. We see them much more rarely here, where our land is much more open.

EDIT: Here's an adult, from our old house in MA. Note the white "eyeline".
