I served on the School Committee in Harvard MA for seven years

This was in the days when Massachusetts rolled out their standardized MCAS testing. Harvard was, at the time and for a brief time, the top-ranked public school system in Massachusetts.
Coincidence? I think not. ;)

In all seriousness, it was satisfying and gratifying. As an elected official, I felt a real responsibility to represent the perspectives of folks I didn't even necessarily agree with, and I developed a reputation of being extremely balanced and fair (to my kids' endless amusement).
The only part I didn't enjoy was contract negotiations with the teacher's union. I participated in two. One went well -- the other one was painful and protracted.

I won't apologize for bragging a bit about this -- it is one of the more worthwhile things I've done in my life, and I am rather proud of it.
Plus, I got to hand each of our two kids their diplomas at their HS graduations. :)

all the best,
mrh
