Back when copper was through the roof...

...and apparently it's headed there again (I don't follow metals much), there was a guy here with a plan. Rather than stealing the copper plumbing out of vacant homes, he acquired/built (IDK which?) a "sorting machine" to sort pennies by weight. He was going to banks (all over the place) and buying large quantities of pennies--as in thousands of dollars in pennies per week/month. He was sorting them by weight to capture the pure copper pennies, smelt them down in his garage, and then sell the pure copper ingots. He'd return the newer copper/zinc pennies to the banks. Apparently, the copper was worth more by weight than a penny.

Another guy got busted stealing the "old school" cast-aluminum parking meters. He'd empty them of any money, and then scrap the meters for scrap value. He had hundreds of them in his garage when they caught him.

"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
