...I'm a retired university professor/research scientist. I taught at the graduate level, but when I was a grad student, I also served as a teaching assistant--I taught some undergrad classes. I'd have a class of 40 freshmen or sophomores--over half of which had no clue what they wanted to do--Mommy and Daddy told them they were going to college, so off they went. Some were even told what their degree/career path was to be.
I had one student that was told that he was going to be a doctor--and he was miserable. A couple decades later, I recognized him on TV accepting his Tony Award for his Broadway production of something (I don't recall the play). He never wanted to be pre-med, but that's all his parents would pay for.
