My wife and I met while she was in med school and I was in grad school. We were the stereotypical "broke-ass college students", but neither of us were deep in debt. We both had academic scholarships, and then grant/research stipends that helped, and worked side-jobs when we could. She ended-up with an MD and PhD, I ended-up with two PhDs--then we actually started our lives. We didn't have kids until we were in our 30's--once the dust had settled.
I bought a house as soon as we could swing it, because renting builds no equity. Even if it's a dump, it's yours (and the bank's), but you can sell it. I sold a beautiful Trans Am to make the down-payment. Yeah, we started "late" compared to some of our peers, in terms of the nice house, nice cars, and all that BS, but when we started, we weren't buried in debt.
"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
