Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

MERV-13 is probably about as far up the chain that I would go...

...for a typical home HVAC system. The older the system, the lower-rating that it can effectively work-with. Remember the old fiberglass woven/mesh filters that couldn't stop anything smaller than a cigarette butt?--and probably filled the house with more fiberglass particulate contamination (from shedding) than they actually did filtration?

Air handling systems (HVAC) are/were designed to service the volumetric requirements of their installation. Anything that impedes/reduces air-flow capacity reduces the efficiency/effectiveness of the system. The "better" the filter, the greater the restriction. This was part of the issue during the early days of the pandemic with people wanting to retro-fit HEPA filtration into schools, offices, and other public buildings. The mechanical systems couldn't function properly with the added resistance and subsequently reduced air-flow. It would have essentially required gutting entire systems, installing new (larger) ductwork and blowers to maintain volume of air-flow ($$$ + years of time).

Most importantly--CHANGE YOUR FILTERS REGULARLY! I do mine once a month.

"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
