RE: I'm a fan of the salary cap...

The salary cap is making the front office of professional teams almost as important as the product on the field. The ability and willingness to evaluate players available in the draft is often a touchy subject as is the evaluation of fan favorites. There was a lot of complaining and head scratching after the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to Miami this year. As much talent as he has displayed during his time with the Chiefs, he hasn't been able to fake out Father Time to prevent or stop the injuries that come with performing at a high level. More than one talking head has mentioned that the most desirable ability is availability.

Consider Sammy Watkins, a player with a lot of potential when he was signed by the Chiefs for a nice chunk of money. When healthy and on the field, he was a valuable asset but he was often sidelined with injuries. He spent one year with Miami after leaving the Chiefs and is now signed to Green Bay. I wish him well but WRs haven't been known to have long careers in the NFL.There are and have been exceptions but if you're a GM, do you bet the team's money on maybes and what ifs or do you take a chance on a rookie with upside that can be coached up and a much lower contract cost?

We Chiefs fans wanted to see Tyrann Mathieu get a contract offer this year but the cap made that difficult as well. I know that we'll miss him as a player with his great football smarts and desire to play at the top of his game but a contract commensurate with other players of his value would have put the cap square in the face of Chiefs reality. Along with the other players of value that have left, I predict that there will be some teeth gritting and a bit of wincing as I see whether or not the coaches can produce the supporting cast for that Mahomes magic that we've been told to expect for his mega millions contract. The NFL isn't standing still.
