Correct re WWII. It was offered In lieu of wage increases because of price and wage controls.
Agree on awfulness, but inertia is a powerful force, even among employers who would rather get rid of it themselves. Of course for many workers it keeps them "loyal" to their employer. One of the things the ACA was supposed to do was free workers from that bind. Maybe worked for some, I don't know. I'm thankful for the pre existing condition clause. About to go see my Dr. about yet another one that's crept up for me, ain't I lucky.
