You also do realize that (and it varies state-by-state, jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction) that medical examiners/coroners and county sheriffs are elected positions, and have no requirements for a medical degree or a background in criminal justice. Anybody can get their name on the ballot, and possibly get elected to the position.
