Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

That's just disrespectful...

...my two younger uncles were decorated veterans and had done their tours of duty in Vietnam. I had two older cousins that were still there at the time. My father and grandfathers had served. Obviously, they would have been supportive and proud of me if I had volunteered, but by 1974 things were winding-down and they didn't want me to go if I didn't have to. They wanted me to go to college and get on with my life--skipping that chapter. Had I been called-upon, my ass would have been on the next flight or bus to boot camp.

In all honesty, I'm a fan of conscription. Not necessarily solely military conscription, but a mandatory term of service to your country. Opposed to the military and their objectives/purpose?--go do disaster relief work, fight wildfires, work at a food bank or soup kitchen, clean-up our national parks--there are plenty of things that need to be done that don't involve war. Hell, a few of the people in my fraternity got their undergrad degrees and signed-up for the Peace Corps upon graduation. Not the same as joining the military, but they were committed to some form of "service".

"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
