Schools are for education. Teachers are educators--not baby-sitters, counselors, security guards, nurses, or food-service workers.
To make matters worse, in my state (OH), school tax (property tax) increases are put on the general election ballot. No one wants to vote to increase their property taxes. More affluent neighborhoods/districts are far more likely to vote for an increase, but lower-income neighborhoods with under-funded/crappy schools?--good f**cking luck.
Budget problems?--cut a couple teachers. Try to cut the athletics budget, or get rid of a member of the coaching "staff" (and I don't know why a HS needs an entire coaching "staff"), and you've got a riot on your hands at the next school board meeting.
IF athletic programs or other extra-curricular programs ARE actually cut or even endangered, some magnanimous donor will step-up to provide funding. Beg for money to keep an art or music teacher?--no dice.
I'm a retired university professor and I've seen the same BS (and even worse) at the collegiate level. The term "student athlete" is an oxymoron. Most are not even the least bit "studious", nor do they intend to stick-around and complete a degree. But they're perfectly content to take scholarship money that could have been used to fund actual "students". And now, the NCAA is allowing them to make money on their NIL--total BS.
IMO--if you haven't completed a degree, the first check you get--whether it be for NIL endorsements, or a pro signing bonus--should be garnished to re-pay your scholarship money to the university--maybe next time it will go toward an education (I doubt it, but I can dream, can't I?).
