...(and yes I am a nuclear power advocate) is that following Chernobyl and subsequently Fukushima, there has basically been a moratorium on the development and construction of new nuclear facilities in the US. The average age of operating nuclear power plants in the US is 40 years.
Instead of continuing to develop and build new/safer nuclear power plants, we elected to cease development and construction, and continue to operate these old plants that are based on technology from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
The "youngest" nuke plant was completed in 2016, with the second youngest being completed in 1996 (both in TN), so they are a bit newer and probably safer, but the bulk of the reactors still in operation are significantly older, and most likely, far less-safe.
The only nuclear power plant on my local grid is the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, OH--just outside of Cleveland. Construction began in 1974, but it didn't go "live" until 1987. It was scheduled for decommissioning last year, but legislators (in 2019) extended operation into this year--but it is still slated to be decommissioned later this year.
Obviously we are not getting a new one, so now we are losing ~3,800 megawatts of power from our grid. The only other sources are natural gas and coal, and they are trying to shut-down all of the coal-fired sources.
So what are we supposed to do? It's too flat for any hydro-electric, winds off of Lake Erie are too unpredictable for wind-generation, and the climate is not exactly conducive to solar. So it's "burn baby, burn".
