If you want to recycle around here, you have to sort it, package it, and take it to one of the few recycling centers still in operation--yourself.
There are a handful of "community recyclable bins" in the area, but they don't collect on regular residential routes anymore. Many of the recycling centers have shut-down, as well. It cost too much to operate vs the value of the output materials.
I know some of the commercial drivers that work for one of the "biggies" in trash collection, and they've told me that before they ceased recycling collections, that they used to just empty those trucks into the same landfill as everything else--it just "looked better" to have the recycling trucks running routes--then, even that got "too expensive".
