RE: Your first TV

I have no clue as to the brand of the first one we had--it might have been Westinghouse, since my father and grandfather both worked for Westinghouse.

It wasn't a console--it was one of the ones that had a unit like an old horizontal desktop computer case as the base, and the CRT was on a swivel/tilt-mount held in a bracket on the top. Just guessing, but about a 12" B&W screen.

When we went to color, it was all Sylvanias--my dad swore by and at them for years--big honkin' consoles. We even had a console stereo/TV combo unit with the TV, TT and Tuner all in one--not even sure if it was actually a stereo console, or just mono.

I remember my grandmother having one of the "burn your house down" consoles--probably in the mid/late 60's. The "instant-on" TV. Everything just sat there on "idle", and came on immediately when you hit the ON button. Pretty sure it was a Curtis-Mathes.

Living out in the stix, reception was an issue, and we had a HUGE antenna tower with a rotor and "moonraker" to get a handful (as in one hand) of channels. "Rabbit ears" were pointless--all you could get with them was the "polar bear in a snowstorm".

"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
