Every energy conversion or transfer involves "losses"--some more significant than others. That is a given/known factor. However, the end-product is "value-added" as being more "useful"--that's what justifies the losses.
$1K of crude (let's just say 10 barrels, which is 420 gal) delivered to your house is useless to fuel your car or heat your home. $1K in gasoline (let's say 225 gal) or heating oil (let's say 275 gal) is far more useful.
