Star Wars isn't Science Fiction, nor is Doctor Who. Both are what should be referred to as Science Fantasy (because the technology is largely never discussed/totally implausible). Star Wars was based on Lord of the Rings, I believe, so that is sort of telling.

Star Trek was Science Fiction although that has changed with the modern series'.

From what folks tell me - Dune is more appreciated by the folks who have read the novel(s). But the movie has to work on its own IMO.

For example - just watching Dune - Would be classed as Science Fantasy. The books may go more in-depth about how the technology of the universe works but for just a moviegoer none of that was on the screen.

I mean I am one of the few people I know who liked "The English Patient" but I appreciated that movie more because I had read and wrote a paper in one of my literature classes on the Michael Ondaatje novel.

I also quite liked another Ralph Fiennes movie called Oscar and Lucinda because I wrote a paper on the Peter Carey Booker prize-winning Novel of the same name. I had perhaps a fuller understanding/empathy of the story and characters.

Indeed, I never read the Lord of the Rings novels - maybe if I did I would have liked the movies more.

Similarly, many critics claim the new West Side Story is much better than the original but it didn't do anything for me because I have never been a big fan of movie musicals (on stage I have liked them, especially seeing Miss Saigon in London) but I am just not a big fan of the genre.
