RE: Denis Villeneuve is great...

I liked Blade Runner 2049 and I liked Sicario a lot.

Dune was meh. The problem is that I was rooting for the Giant sandworm to eat everyone. I didn't CARE about any character because none of them gave me anything to care about.

Rule one of science fiction is you need some sort of anchor character to root for - in Star Wars that was Luke Skywalker - in Dune it was a boring cardboard droopy-faced muppet.

Timothée Chalamet in a zombie performance playing (who cares) Paul Atreides.

The spectacle was good - big special effects worthy of technical awards. Dune makes you feel you are in a Dune starving for water (writing, character development). Meh. It was nominated so a lot of people liked it - that's why I watched it - I always try to watch nominated films because they are well-liked. So definitely try to see it. Maybe I can generate enough low expectations for you that you will enjoy it. Perhaps my expectations were too high given it was nominated and given I liked Sicario and Blade Runner 2049.

It's also possible that if I like Dune 2 I'll change my impression on Dune.
