RE: Ahh, you understand they're just actors?

I would not presume to think that books are more honest or truthful than movies. Movies are after all written first from a screenplay that may be original or adapted from a novel.

I didn't care for Nomadland but I didn't really have a problem with hiring a well-known actress to play Fern - most of the film had real-life nomads. If one reads up on the film the guy that ran the park is in fact the real guy who leads the park. It's been a while so I forget the names.

All films need to make money - people invest in the movie and to get people to invest you need to convince them they will make a buck. So it also makes sense for producers to get a big enough name to get people to go and see the movie - and being able to post in the advertisements "Academy Award Winner Francis McDormand" is a pretty big get for an unknown director. The words "star power" were created for a reason - most people go to movies for the actors, not the directors (as they should) or the writers (as they should).

I don't see how this film exploited poor people - or that it was a lefty piece - if anything it wasn't lefty enough.

And these people weren't really the "homeless class" - a motorhome or a camper is still "a home" - they're not lying in the streets.

My problem is that it didn't have anything to say. Perhaps that's what some people liked about it - just a matter-of-fact day in the life on a class of people who are above the people sleeping in cardboard boxes and the people who can afford to pay rent.

My other complaint was that since it already was heavily non-actor-based - they could have just made an out-and-out documentary about these people. But then documentaries don't make money and you need financial backers to be able to get a film off the ground.

The problem with Hollywood is the big money wants to use the formulas they know work to make money. This is why every other film is a Marvel movie because kids have more disposable income and time on their hands to go to the movies. They're not going to see talky drama - they want cars to blow up and pretty cast memebers.
