The front end of the Edsel was a nontrivial part of its failure.
The styling was both too conventional (after a big build-up) and too ugly (the front end, in particular), earning it the nickname I used for the subject line.

The ordinary-ness of the Edsel was a big part of its demise... as was the timing of its introduction. A recession at the end of the 1950s into 1960 spawned the American "compact car" revolution (Falcon, Nova, Dart) and doomed the most vulnerable of the late 50s behemoths -- the Edsel being the easiest target.
