There is a large number of wind turbines in the pass where I10 leaves Palm Desert heading for LA. They were installed a long time ago, 80's I think. At the time there was a significant tax incentive and the development was sold as shares with the tax benefits passed along to the investors. It did ok for the investors, but it did could not compete with other sources of electricity.
Years later, the transmission oil was replaced with synthetic which increased production which changed the profitability to positive as it became competitive with other sources of electricity.
This next part is purely conjecture. As we age, we keep up with technology and cultural change less and less. And we tend to oppose belief of things that take us out of our comfort zone.
