Seymore Cray would design and build a sailboat each winter, sail it during the summer and burn it in the fall. He wanted to do this with his super computers, to not be restricted by a previous design. This is planned obsolescence, or rather planned annihilation. What Microsoft, Apple and Google do is a balancing act between new designs and legacy support. And each handle it differently.
The result is that Apple products are easier to use, but can be limiting in what they can do compared to Microsoft or Google. Which is a good differentiation, easy to choose which to purchase and invest in.
Regarding which have a longer useful life, there isn't that much difference, with Microsoft and Google having a slight edge, with the most significant difference is that if you want to put the effort in, you have a better chance of getting older applications to work.
