I was poor so I know. You open a bank account and they charge $9.99 per month for the chequing account BUT if you have a minimum of $5,000 the fee is waived. Huh? So if you have the money you don't pay fees but if you are poor and struggling FU - pay up. When I call the bank to complain about the yearly credit card fee - they look at my bank account and waive it - good luck for the poorer folks that they will do that for them. It also factors into things like line of credit interest rates - much lower when you have money.
Min wage is $7.25 in the US but it's stayed that way for a decade which also means the $8 an hour job is also still $8.00 and probably $12 an hour jobs are still $12 an hour even though with inflation it should be a lot higher. When the cost of living goes up 3% every year for 10 years you need a wage that is going up 3% a year to match - or else in ten years, you have a 30%+ pay cut. As the 3% is compounding.
So if you live in a state/country that screws you over it means you have fewer dollars and fewer choices.
Where I somewhat disagree - and perhaps it's because I lived in British Columbia, Canada is that the cheap used cars tended to be of the better gas mileage variety like your Ford Festiva, Honda Fit/Civic, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra, Chevy Chevettes. Basically small 4 bangers with 30mpgs. And generally decent public transportation.
When I went to University I was broke living on a 3 inch foamy on the kitchen floor and I sucked it up and took the bus and walked. I chose the university because my student loan money would go further at Vancouver Island University than it would have if I went to UBC or Simon Fraser University because these were located in wealthy areas and my rent would be have been much higher.
Now the minimum wage is $15.20 in British Columbia which ain't too bad. Well, it's bad if you live in Vancouver but doable outside of the city.
Even on Min wage - folks can buy new cheap hybrid cars in BC. The terms will suck like 7-year car loans and the like but it's doable.
