But that era also was largely shielded from the press - the studios created personal lives - gay actors were married to be perceived and to be held up as a Man's man - example; Rock Hudson.

So there was no real role model aspect to them because you never actually knew them like you do today. One of the reasons there are no "stars" today is because there is no mystery anymore.

When you look back at Madonna videos from the early 1980s like Holiday or Material Girl (Based on Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend") because Madonna is a huge Monroe fanatic. It's sort of laughable to me that she became a sex symbol for videos that would not have made a blip sexually in Europe.

Self-promotion is somewhat arguable too - again the studio promoted their stars like Monroe and Judy Garland so much so that they were partially or largely responsible for killing them. Madonna put out a music video and some nut group or news station would go crazy because her video had a black man as Jesus (umm Jesus wasn't white) but these outlets were bashing her and she basically told them to get stuffed.

I do agree that the SEX book was self-promotion but hey it was basically her own Playboy. A Terrific body back then - she likes sex - all good by me. I also liked that her music had superior production values and sound quality compared to most 1980s and 1990s era recordings. I never felt she was much of a singer or dancer - but that's not all that important for pop - have a catchy tune, sing above average, dance above-average put on a show with high production values, have fireworks shoot out from your bra, and bring some sex appeal.

I am pleased that modern television in the US actually shows sex and nudity in shows like Game of Thrones.
