The "name" of the school helps (to some degree), but...

...more of it depends on specific professors and the "strength" of a specific program/department at your particular school. There's a small private school not far from me (Kenyon College). It's brutally expensive, and known (pretty-much exclusively) for it's Education program. If you get a teaching or education administration degree from there, you are "golden"--write your own ticket. Any other degree from there, you might as well have gotten from a community college.

Both my late wife and I are OSU alumni, as are our daughters--one with a law degree, the other with a medical degree. Solid programs, but not a "name" like Harvard. But more important was that the daughter with the law degree clerked for a Federal Circuit Court judge, and the one with the medical degree did her surgical residency at Johns Hopkins. Having those things on their resumes is more significant than where their got their degrees.

"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
