My wife and I went to college in the 80s. When we started tuition was $250 a semester for a full time load. Between us we built up $30,000 in student loans - took us 6 years to clear the debt while supporting a family of 5. My youngest son who graduated with a Masters in engineering borrowed $60,000, lived at home and paid it off in less than 4 years.
We are a white family and income a bit above $100K when the kids were in college. The kids where scholarly and great students - there were no academic scholarships available - period. However some of their friends, minority or low income, some who were middle of the road academically did get scholarships. I'm not complaining - it seemed fair enough to me.
Even since they graduated tuition has increase greatly. And truthfully ASU has been expanding boundlessly for decades now - and banks have profited mightily for taxpayer secured student loans. It's just more of the big players profiting off of taxpayer secured consumer debt, ie. more of the rape of American workers.
