Luckily, City College also had classes for 'keypunch operators' so all we had to do was fill out our programs on forms and the keypunch students would produce a 'deck' of cards for us as part of their class requerments. But...
Some were better than others so the first few runs had MANY errors. And...
As the keypunch machines were old and City College didn't maintain them much, the ribbons were always missing so you had to read the card manually rather than read what SHOULD have been printed along the top of the card.
But my education in data processing goes back to the mid 60's when, under the Adult Education Program started by JFK, I was able to enroll in an 'Associate Degree' program in data processing. The first classes (and the only ones I completed) were on 'unit record' equipment. Sorters, Collators, etc. Learning how set up the 'patch panels', etc.
A night school program which required about a year of provable work history to qualify for the 'Adult Education' part but...
Only 1/2 time (night school) so no draft deferment applied and the rest is history.
First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
