RE: Maybe the best strategy is what Asian American families...

Might be the best strategy for the parents...for the kids, not so much. We are encouraging ours (3 and 4 years away from college) to go away, and to choose a college that requires freshman (and sophomores preferably) to live on campus, and provides enough housing for them!

My wife and I both did the commuter/transfer thing and it was not particularly fulfilling. I was lucky in my later college days to be able to sample a little of it and realized how much of life I had missed. The kids I was with, who were all very close to each other, had met years before, in fact in the 2 weeks of orientation before their freshman year even started. They welcomed me, but I was never really a part of them. Of course I could buy the booze, but I think it was more than that. I sure wish I had been able to meet them at the beginning instead of close to the end, they were great kids and we had a lot of fun, and got through some tough times together as well.

So that's where a good chunk of our Silicon Valley cracker box equity will go, likely to private schools, hopefully with some aid. Then we might just join you down there in Santa Fe (if there's any money left)!
